Thanks to Arguleon-veq for this.
The Tau, as you will already know is an army based predominantly on shooting, there are exceptions to this in the case of the kroot and kroot hounds (But even the kroot can lay down an impressive amount of fire power in big squads.)
The main advantage for the Tau is that a lot of their shooting units can lay down firepower whilst on the move.
Fire warriors are one of the mobile firepower units that the Tau have to offer. The option to equip the squad with pulse carbines is a good one. The pulse carbine allows the Tau to move and still fire an impressive 18 inches, this allows the fire warriors to move out of charge range of most units and still be able to fire at the approaching enemy. This makes them a very hard unit for the opponent to catch especially if they don't have fleet of foot, and even with fleet of foot it's very difficult to catch Fire warriors on the move with pulse carbines.
This gives the Tau an advantage over most armies because armies such as guard would not be able to shoot the approaching enemy if they were retreating out of charge range.
The fire warriors also have access to the highly underrated devilfish, not only does it lend to your fire warriors shooting capabilities but it can also keep them away from faster enemy units such as bikers. If you add this to the devilfish's survivability this makes the fire warriors one of the hardest squads to catch in the game.
The Tau also have battlesuits, another mobile firepower unit because all XV suits get to make an extra move in the assault phase. This will allow you to get within range to fire at the enemy and then fall back out of assault range.
The Hammerhead is the last of the mobile firepower units. It is the only tank in the game that can keep on the move whilst firing an ordnance template (The submunition railgun shot) and the fact that the template doesn't scatter makes it a very deadly tank.
So next time you take to the battlefield with Tau try to keep in character with Tau background.
Try to keep on the move rather than just staying stationary and hope that there won't be enough of the enemy left to really damage your army when it gets into combat (Which is how many people play Tau). Because after all the Tau see last stands as a lack of imagination or the last refuge of an incompetent commander.
