Thanks to Robert Jamieson for this.
Well having had my Tau for a while and finally getting challenged to a battle made me think to myself: 'What should I paint my army like' and 'Which sept are they from?'
After toying around with the idea for a day I decided on a scheme:
- Firstly I undercoat my models chaos black.
- Next I gave it a coat of blood red, I don't worry about it being neat just get most of the armour.
- After the first coat of blood red paint, I paint on another 2 coats; it usually takes about 3 coats to get the color of red that I want.
- Next I use chaos black to tidy up the model, making sure that only the blood red is on the armour.
- Now if there is any skin visible, I use codex grey and highlight that with skull white; a simple yet effective look for Tau skin.
- Any team leader's helmets are painted bleached bone and then highlighted with skull white.
Now for the last few touches:
- The barrels of the pulse rifles and most other guns are painted Bolt Gun Metal.
- The strange little balls at the end of the Pulse carbine and Pulse rifles are painted Brazen Brass (With a Chaos black undercoat.)
- The black areas are highlighted with codex grey and you're done.
Below are a few pictures showing my paint scheme:
