XV-96 Smart Battlesuits were introduced to add mobile fire support to Tau armies in difficult situations where neither XV-88 Broadside Battlesuits nor the Hammerhead Gunships were useful. These units were adapted for difficult situations where they were used as a mobile support weapons, offering heavy fire support wherever they were needed across the battlefield.
The Smart Battlesuits lack the firepower of the Broadside Battlesuits due to their ability to utilise a Jetpack, enabling them to offer fire support anywhere. This was only made possible through minimising armour and support systems so the battlesuit could cope with the heavy weaponry.
Even in positions where no enemies could be seen due to their Smart Missile Systems. This made Smart Battlesuit Teams extremely efficient on difficult situations where extra mobility was required.
The following army list entry may be taken in Tau armies, occupying one Heavy Support choice on the Force Organisation Chart.

Equipment Smart Teams are equipped with an XV--96 Smart Battlesuit. The above profile has been amended to include the suit's enhancements
Character One Shas'ui per team may be designated a team leader at +5 points. They may then select items from the Tau Armoury. A Shas'ui team leader can be updated to Shas'vre at +5 points.
Independent You may take up to three XV-96 Smart Battlesuits as a single Heavy Support choice but each member of the unit operates independently on the battlefield. So therefore automatically pass the All On Your Own test. As such the team may not be bonded by the Ta'lissera.

When I read the headline my first thoughts went to seeker missiles. I'd love having a suit version of the Sky ray. Start with a Broadside. Remove all weapons. Add two seeker missiles on each shoulder, a networked markerlight on one arm and a pulse carbine on the other arm. Done! (I have no clue as to what point cost it should be.) /Olle

ya'll, both the broadside, hammerhead, and the devilfish can get ONE sms, not two, not two twinlinked ones, just ONE. But yeah, max256 is right about his other stuff on playtesting, some house rules are good, but this one still needs a lot of tweaking

as if the tau dont already have enough sms i mean XV-88's can take 2 twin linked sms and so can a hammerhead crisis suits can also take missle pods which are fewer but alot more nasty

i give this a 4. I like the idea of the suit being independant on the feild, for other tau models to 'equip' as it were, if someone fell out. However, the equipment offered makes it weaker then a standard crisis suit for double the price.

I have to say I agree with max256 here. Also from a fluff perspective there are 2 things to take into consideration. The first number in a battlesuits name indicates it's mass class. The second indicates it's battlefield role. So an XV25 is a suit approx twice the mass of a normal fire warrior and designated for stealth or covert operations. As far as i know these are the meanings of the second number 5= Stealth (XV15, XV25) 8= fire support or heavy support (XV88, XV88-2) 2= Prototype as in Shadowsun's XV22

I'm sorry, I just don't understand how people generate new units. There is normally a lot of testing to decide if the point values for a unit will be balanced with its abilities. The broadside suit is already armed with a smart missile systems, two of them. If I needed added fire power I would use seeker missiles or a Sky Ray and pathfinder teams. A Crisis Suit team could also fill that role. I also am not sure the author understands what 'Hardwired' systems are, you limit support systems not hardwired systems.
