Thanks to Hanging Dragon for this
Textured paint is mentioned in many GW publications but I want to mention it here because it makes a huge difference to the quality of a lot of terrain.
You will need:
Start with a quantity of Spak Filler then add about 1 part in 5 of PVA Glue, the same in sand, a few drops of detergent and a little paint, then add water a little at a time and mix into a paste. The exact measurements are a case of trial and error because it depends on the qualities of the ingredients but you are aiming at a paste with about the same consistency of a sponge cake mixture. The detergent helps to improve the penetrating capabilities of the mixture so you can get it into the little cracks of styrofoam. For paint simply use whatever colour you want as a base for the end product, for me this usually means a little black to create a dark grey for rocks and ruins.
