Thanks to Hanging Dragon for this
Rocks are one of the most basic items to make and they look great. You can scatter them around the battlefield to make difficult terrain and provide cover. I usually count the rocks as a 5+ Save for infantry and vehicles can claim hull down if behind enough rocks.
You will need:
First Step is to rough up the Styrofoam. Keep one side nice and flat so you have a surface to glue down to the base. Start by cutting straight faces in the Styrofoam then hack it up a bit more to rough it up. There's no need to get to carried away because the textured paint will finish the job nicely.
Once you have a selection of basic 'rocks' just position them on some basing card, cut the card to size. Take some time to play with rock combinations to make good cover for models. Once positioned glue the rocks to the base. Paint the rocks with a generous quantity of textured paint then allow to dry.
To finish just dry brush with pale grey or white. Paint the base green and when dry glue flock to it. Add a few little touches like course flock moss or little coloured seaweed bushes.
